Why I Got Board Certified
From the time I became a civil trial lawyer, it was my belief that practice before the courts required a standard of competency based upon experience and knowledge of the law of procedure, evidence and a general familiarity with substantive law in order to adequately represent a client in litigation.
It was also my view that certification in these subjects would create a higher standard for lawyers who practiced in this area and thus provide a better service to their clients.
When the NBTA was founded, I saw this as an opportunity to participate in establishing these standards by sitting for and passing the examination and thereby encouraging others to do the same.
I am also pleased that the NBTA has recognized that strong ethical principles are a necessary element of this practice.
I consider it an honor to have sat for the first examination by the NBTA and would encourage every lawyer who handles civil litigation to aspire to obtain this certification.
Lawyers have a duty to the public and their clients to provide competent legal services. A certification by the NBTA demonstrates that the lawyer has taken this responsibility seriously.
